What is a Ramp Contest?

For instance, if your vehicle has a wheelbase of 90" and it drive 85" up the ramp, then it's score is:

(85 / 90) * 1000 = 944.444 or 944

A ramp contest is a competition to see who can get the highest score.

There are various ways to improve your score such as:

• Disconnecting your anti-sway bars.
• Lowering your tire pressure to around 12 psi or less.
• Positioning the center of your tire on the edge of the ramp.
• Cranking your front wheels to the right.
• Loosening the leaf spring clamps.
• Removing shocks if they are limiting your suspension travel.
• Adding extra weight to the vehicle.
• Using smaller tires to improve the fender clearance.

Some of these "cheats" are legitimate because they reflect trail driving conditions. For instance, I always disconnect my anti-sway bar and lower my tires' pressure to 10-12 psi when I go offroading. My spring clamps are also modified so that they are always loose. Other "cheats" don't have much of a real-world benefit beyond the ramp.
 

The Story

I'd also like to thank all the people who bought 4WD Association of BC memberships from Traci Deman, who set up and manned the associations booth for the duration of the event. As usual, Traci did a fantastic job in promoting the association and making our message heard.

And lastly (this is longer than some Oscar acceptance speeches!!!), I'd like to thank Jonathan Yim, Martin Chung and Greg Wcislo for helping out. I drafted them into working and they cheerfully obliged.

The MAN himself! Al Berikoff shows us what his 4Offroad Suzuki can do.	The day's winner of the 20 deg AND 30 deg ramp contest: Ben Olson and his transmogrified Suzuki LJ! The crazy air bag suspension gave him incredible control and articulation.	The full-size trucks turned in some pretty decent scores.
Chris James' Nissan with a solid axle conversion in the front.	Chris Waterman's YJ taking on the 30 deg ramp.	Sporting a relatively simple SOA suspension setup, Jon Bruce's CJ7 turned in an extremely good pair of scores.
Al found a car destined for the scrap heap so he made it available as a one-obstacle obstacle course.
Al took a not particularly great line over the car. A tire slipped...	...and OVER he went.	It was a blatant attempt to win the free BC4x4.COM sticker we promised to anyone who put their vehicle on its side.
It was rude, loud, and it scared small children. But still, you couldn't deny the appeal of an alcohol-injected mud-bogger, especially when the driver, "Flap," had such a fine sense of showmanship.
Flap is bringing her in for a landing. What else would you expect from a torque converter that engages at 4,000 rpm. Subtlety is lost on it.	Touchdown!	Flap entertains the crowd with a 44" Bogger burn out. Click on the picture to see the bigger image and savour the look of intense pain on the viewers' faces. Yep, that was one loud truck.
There was still plenty of car leftover after Flap was done with it so the "small dogs" got to play on it as well.
See? Suzukis and Jeeps can get along well...if they're ganging up on someone else.	Dog pile!!!!	Tip of the day: If the view from your car looks like this, call 9-1-1.
Lars asks, "what's the number for 911?"	Traci recruits more 'wheelers to the cause. Thanks Traci!	Sometimes it's not about how well you built your 4x4. Sometimes it's not about how great a driver you are. Sometimes it just takes a really cool sticker to turn you into a hardcore fourwheeler. Jason Conover from SNORT knows this well. Note his look of steely determination. Eye of the tiger! Eye of the tiger! Even without their trucks, the SNORT guys kick butt.
