The Dakota Territory Challenge is held each summer over Labor Day weekend in
scenic Black Hills region of South Dakota. The Whispering Pines Campground is
the base camp that the Black Hills Four Wheelers have been using for the last
three years. It is located about 40 minutes out of Rapid City, South Dakota
to the South West up in the hills. This seems to be a good central location because
many of the trails are scattered through out the hills. A complete description of all
the trails and Challenge information can be found on the Black Hills Four Wheelers home page
at:
Black Hills Four Wheelers
or they can be contacted by snail mail at: Black Hills Four Wheelers, P.O. Box 1354, Rapid City,
SD 57709.
Many of the trails are located through out the region on a combination of public and private land. The BH4Wheelers pull all the special use permits to make this event happen. They also spend many hours working with the forest service to repair any damaged caused during the course of the event or by natures wrath. I know after visiting last spring it looked as though Kong would be off the map due to the large number of fall downs that occurred over the winter. But by the time I got back in the fall the trail had been cleared and was once again open. Thanks in part to the local wheelers. Tim Nevadomski also related a story of how after some negligent users had been on Twisted the BH4Wheelers had went out and replanted a sensitive hillside to assure no erosion occurred. Please contact the Black Hills Four Wheelers if you have any questions on running these trails.
