Behind the Rocks Moab 1999

Another picture of some guy from Idaho, would a trail report be complete without an Idahoen, descends Nosedive in his CJ5. He is followed by John Nutter in his CJ7.

Here I descend Nosedive.

Here Brett Davis descends Nosedive in his Scrambler that he says has earned the name "Freakshow". We weren't sure if this was becuase of the way it looked or the way Brett drives.

A few shots of a rock buggy called Sniper built by Avalanche Engineering. This rig sports 1/4 elleptical suspension at all four corners, 350 zz4 crate motor, 700r4, Atlas t-case. and Dana 60 axles front and rear, all running on 42" Super Swampers. To say this rig was awesome would be a slight understatement.

Here Sniper descends Nosedive and then climbs Up Chuck.

Here Brett Davis and the Idahoen climb Upchuck.

Here I climb the Dome on Behind the Rocks. I climbed this Dome on three wheels. When we got to the bottom my drivers front started to rise and just didn't come down. About halfway up I let off the gas to see if it would come down and it didn't budge. So I realized at that point I had better make the obstacle or I was in trouble. So I stayed in the throttle and crested the dome on three wheels. From the bottom I was told it looked like I was crab walking.

Paul Weitlauf was sitting in the passenger seat video taping and was completly oblivious to what was going on. All he could see was sky looking out the view finder.

I didn't realize how bad this was until later that night we watched some video that Sue Isle had shot that day. After watching the video and seeing that I carried my front tire 3 to 4 feet in the air the whole way up I almost crapped my pants. It looked way scarier than it actually felt.

Here me, Brett Davis, and an unknown but nice Flatfender come down a nice drop.

John Nutter and myself on White Knuckle hill. This hill is incredible steep just as your back tires drop off the ledge your front wheels make contact with the bottom. That is in a CJ7 with anything shorter you have all four wheels on the drop at once. Some vehicles actually stick the front bumper hard enough to lift the rear tires off the edge. Rumor has it that a few people have flooped on their roof here. It would be really easy to do here.

Thanks to Paul Weitlauf and Action Shots for the pictures
