Our group amasses to a see what lies ahead. After sitting around the campfire the night before with Josh Lowenstein he foolishly offers to show us this new Moab trail. Or was it we foolishly accepted his offer. Either way we had a great time on this extremely challenging Moab trail.
Here I try a line at the first obstacle on Rusty Nail. It turned out to be a good one as I walk right up.
Here Cal conquers the first obstacle on Rusty Nail. Cal's Willy's is something to see. He runs a 700r4 followed by twin Marlin Crawler T-Cases. His final crawl ratio is something like 332 to 1. His motor will be just humming away and the truck will be just be barely moving. Truly what they mean by crawling.
John Reynolds, Jeffs freind in CJ5, and Cal all try their hand at the second series of obstacles on Rusty Nail.
Here Jeff Reynolds with passenger Paul Wietlauf, Myself with Josie my wife, And Rob Eide with family aboard and kids watching videos in the back all attack the second stretch.
Jeff takes the last step before the ledge.
Here Joe Isle prepares to drop off the ledge into the abyss. I am ground guiding him. At this point the driver really can't see anything but the ground guide and must put his complete trust in him. Joe makes the section flawlessly.
Here I am expertly guided by John Nutter. This section of the trail was very nerve racking as it appeared if you went over you wouldn't stop till you got to the bottom. A couple of hundred feet below.
Here a friend of Jeff's goes down in his Cj5. Followed by Rob Eide in his luxurious Xj. Finally John Nutter guides down Ron Hollatz in his YJ with a 4.0 and a Advance Adapters T-Case.
I try my hand at the Table top after watching John in his Bronco get up on top. But he is a little taller than me and it just wasn't to be for me. I was dragging on the underside and couldn't get over.
Jeff Reynolds, John Nutter, and myself all take a shot at the crack next to the table top obstacle. All with varying degrees of success. Jeff makes a perfect line through. John Slips and scuffs the side of his Jeep. I had to get twisted up to get the line after trying to get up on the table top.
Here I make an attempt at Double Whammy. I had this idea that with my 1/4 eleptical I could articulate up the obstacle. I was real close to doing just that when someone standing by told me I should start turning up hill. I wanted to get all fours tires up on the first ledge before I did this. I thought this person was aware of this and could see my back tire. But they weren't and when I started turning up hill the Jeep almost went over. So at that point I backed down and called it good.
Thanks to Josie Knorr, Janet Nutter, Sue Isle, Ron Hollatz, Rob Eide, and Paul Weitlauf for the pictures. Also special thanks to Josh Lowenstein for showing us this great trail.
