Toys For Tots 1998
Toys for Tots this year looked to be a total rain out. It had rained almost the whole week before hand and the temperatures had taken a dip from their unseasonable highs.
The wife wasn't feeling well so at the last minute we scrapped the idea of camping and I headed down just for the day. I was to meet a good group of guys from my club the Redliners 4x4 Club
and Ron Hollatz from the Trailriders. I had never met Ron before but he had seen photos of my Jeep so he had no problem finding me when I got the Ford stuck with the Jeep still on the trailer.

Here I am getting stuck with the tow vehicle. We thought by off loading I would be able to make it in but no dice.

This shot shows Toby pulling me up the hill with his creation. Its a S-10 cab on a fullsize blazer chassis running a 454 big block.

As you can see from the shots it was quite wet. It had rained for several days before hand. I came back with more mud on my truck and my Jeep then I care to remember.

This actually was the correct line somewhat. If you just drove in the ruts it was so sloppy that you couldn't get out of them. I had watched one guy get crossed up in them and then had an
ultra easy time getting out so I did the same thing. Except that tree kinda got in my way and I had to screw around to get around it.

As you can see I didn't get around it the first time and actually gave it a little rub with the front bumper.

Somewhere in that rut I picked up a little sticker!

So a little trail extraction was required to get it out.

Some of you may have seen my brothers truck on some of the other trail reports. This isn't his although it looks really similar.
This is actually my freind Franks. This thing turned out really nice. It sports 4 link coil suspension all around, a fiberglass tub, flip frontend,
NP435,and a 370 something stroker Ford motor. Frank builds motors for a living so to say this motor is well built is an understatement.

Here I am coming up the rock gulch at Donleys woods. The rocks were extremely tough to do in the mud. I think this was about as close to wheeling in
the Pacific Northwest as you can come without going. All the rocks had moss and slime all over them. Didn't really look preatty coming up through there but
nobody else did either. Finesse just gets lost in muddy conditions.

Here is Ron Hollatz going up the last ledge at the end of the Rock Gulch. Only two vehicles succesfully made it up under there own power. Neither me nor Ron was one of them.
Both of us had to pull out our winch cables. But thats not to say Ron's YJ isn't well built. He has a ton of neat tricks done to this Jeep and it sounds like more are on the way.

Here is me winching myself up the ledge after making several attempts to make it.

These last three shots are of me and Ron winching up Frank. His starter went out right before he got to the ledge.
We played around trying to get it started but eventually we decided to winch him up. This turned out to be a daunting task
becuase the winch cables tended to suck Frank into the ledge face not up and over. Finally we hooked the two cables on so that
one would pull him up and the other would pull him ahead. After several rehooks and repositioning we finally got him up and over
and from there we were able to pull start him.
This run is a great run and for a good cause. The Rochester Rough Riders pick up the insurance and your entry fee
is a new toy. I, of course, brought a remote control Jeep for some lucky youngster. Although the run was muddier, than most would have
liked, it was still a great run. There was one incident that happen on the trail that was unfortunate and could have been avoided if both drivers had used some common sense.
A driver of a rather large CJ (44's I think) lost his brakes on a particularily tough hill climb and came rolling back down the hill. Well one guy had parked
his CJ at the bottom of the hill to watch the action. You can imagine what happened next.
What I took from this episode was keep your truck in good working order before heading out on the trails. Becuase its not just your truck/life thats on the line.
And two don't park at the very bottom of a difficult hillclimb and then get out of your truck to watch. Leave enough room
in case something goes wrong with the truck ahead of you, the damage will only happen to his truck.
