My rebuilt 1987 22r always seems to have a preignition problem if the timing is set to stock specification. When I start off from a stop and the rpms drop slightly it pings and when I go up a hill at 3500 rpm or more. I've heard another toyota pinging exactly the same as mine does. I have new wires, plugs, cap, and rotor. Does anyone know what this could be caused by ???

Sounds alot like what mine does, I always figured my ignition timing was a bit out and my tensioner is probably worn.

I have been running 87 octane chevron gas. I asked the engine builder if the compression was raised but he said the new pistons were supposed to compensate for that. I've currently retarded the timing just a little bit and run 89 octane. Seems to be good now.
