is the 3rd member of an rear 86 yota compatible with the housings from and 82?? if not what the diff(erence)?? thanks for your help

Yes they will work in an 82 housing. The 86 housing is wider than an 82 rear and thus more desirable because of the extra stability and clearance with your frame. Drums are also bigger.

just some more......
all solid alxe 3rd's, front or rear, 4cl or v6 will bolt into any housing(ifs front diffs and tacomas excluded). spline counts are the same. 4cl gears are slightly smaller and will fit into a v6 3rd, but not vise-versa, and a v6 3rd will fit a 4cl housing.

your answer was a little confusing. i take it that the 3rd from an 86 rear(im not sure if its is from a v6) will fit my 82 housings

yes it should fit, he is talking about the size of ring gears and bearings being larger in a V6 third

so that would then mean that a 3rd from a v6 would not fit?

A V6 third will fit in a 4cyl. housing. The V6 gears (ring and pinion) will not fit in the 4cyl. third member. The pinion bearings are larger and will not fit the 4cyl. third.
