How about over 6 weeks to get my smitty front bumper last fall. Was shipped without hardware and it took a lot of phone calls and " it's been shipped will be there in a few days". Eventually got the bumper parts and all is well but would NSOR have taken that long?

I doubt Al's credit rating has anything to do with requiring a deposit. Pretty much every shop I've been in requires a deposit before they will order big ticket stuff in.

If he was making you pay upfront for items before he brought them in I'd be upset too but a deposit makes sense to me.

FWIW - I've bought a couple sets of tires off Al and never had a problem. Tires were there when he said they would be and the service was good.

Having to pay a deposit is normal for places. I had to pay a deposit when I bought my axles from Exaxt, when I bought my tires from Midway Tire, and when I bought my suspension from NSOR. They just don't want you to go in and order big ticket items, and then decide you don't want it after they have paid the expences of bringing it in.

...Re: "rip-off"

Be careful of what you say on a public forum. Not only are vitriolic rants unpleasant to read, they are defamatory.

If you have personal experiences and facts that you wish to apprise people of in relation to manufacturers, suppliers/businesses who serve our sport, then make sure that you do so accurately, and with the sole intention of educating others.

Generalized slander and character assassination could have unpleasant consequences (and rightly so).

I have no problem with 4offroad, they have done quite a bit of work on my jeep, my husbands sammy, and monzters truck. The work was done well and as promissed.

I am glad that there has been positive things said here. All I know is that there has been no defamation of anyone here. I am presenting facts of what happened to me and other people have chimed in. People need to know the reputation of shops before they buy because sometimes they are not that good. Anyway I am glad that there are those of you who have had good experiences.

...at least, not by you. :) My comment was in response to, "Mr Jeep".

There is nothing wrong with accurate discussion and dissemination of information to help other consumers.

(I'd have responded privately, but you've disabled private messaging, and you have elected to not have your e-mail address accessible).

Wow !!!!!
Some guy sends an item back with half the parts missing and another dozen people jump on the band wagon with "I heard that......." And even post on Pirate 4x4. I wanted to post a reply on Pirate pop up ads.com but have no time for all the sales B.S.

We have very few 4x4 outlets in our area and to be spreading B.S. rumours about Al and his shop, this is bad for all of us , (don't bother replying with But I heard that .....) because that is teenage girl talk and weak. As is the word of a pissed off ex employee.

I can tell you first hand that Al is a great resourse of good info that in my case has always been forthcoming and FREE OF CHARGE. I can't stand some 20 year old with a $1200 truck and 1 year into the sport telling me what is right for my truck, If it does not come in a box from a 4x4 shop it is no good ?????????????

Is Al's credit any good, well that is his concern and nobody has any business venturing there.

Is Al's business ?????? Again, that is his concern and nobody has any business venturing there.

Is Al's work substandard? well this another area that can easily come under fire, all mechanical shops suffer from this, But I can say that there are 4x4 shops out there that will never touch my truck and Al is not one of them.

Is Al's shipping slow? On some items it is, and it does make me angry, but if you want to pay more, go get it at another outlet. I have had to wait a long time for some stuff, but that is what you get when you want to save by having items sent from a great distance, rather from a Vancouver warehouse. But I have to say that I have orded several items that did arrive on time.

Deposit on goods????? I cannot understand why anyone would expect to order a specalized item from anywhere without a deposit.

This talk of having a 4offroad sticker is a heatscore. What?????We have a local 4x4 shop that was accused of being a chop shop and selling the parts to their customers and it was not 4offroad, Customer vehicles were impounded by the police, Now I would think that sticker would be a heat score.

Al at 4offroad is not a family member or a good friend of mine, I just can't stand gossip from a few pissed off people who would see a man's business damaged for thier own reasons or to promote another shop, if you don't like a business, don't shop there, time will tell if they are successful or fail.

I have found that the biggest problem I had at 4offroad was all the decals I ended up with on my truck.

Anyways, Al I still think your a great source of GOOD advise and will still buy stuff at your shop. Even if you do piss me off with your decals.

This is my opinion only,
Ken

Well like I said before, this is my opinion on the shop and what I have had to go thru with him. I am sorry that it pisses some people off but the reason I tried his shop was to try someone new that I hadn't before and I had one of the worst experiences yet with his shop and especially him. I am sure he is knowledgeable but he isn't a very customer service oriented person when it comes to making something right with me at least. I gave him the chance for 6 months to make it right with me before I returned the parts finally.

There are bad experiences at every shop out there I have no doubt but this is excessive. I do all the work on my truck and always have. I have put alot of time and effort into it just like everyone else. There are some who complain to much but I haven't started complaining till after a year of waiting for Al to make it right with me. It is damn hard to make it right with someone who you never call back.

I'm getting pissed with Al and I don't think 4off-rd is getting my business again. I ordered a t-case e-brake through them over a month and a half ago, almost two months. I understand sometimes things take longer than expected but call me back and stop giving me a bunch of bull. I've been calling them every second day for close to a month now.

That - I agree with. And yes, it is my experience, not "I heard that".

I believe in being fair and not playing favorites or bandwagon jumpers. I believe a business like Al’s has a right to a fair representation, as much and no more and no less as the people on this board have a right to know of actual, not overheard experiences. That’s how things remain fair.

By profession, I am a logistics man. I can tell you that every business operates nowadays on so-called “just in time” inventory principle, so the overhead is low. Every vendor, therefore 4offroad included, relies on their supplier for all the parts you order. So when your part is late you really don’t know if it’s Al at 4 offrd or, say, ARB that screwed up. However it would be up to Al to have a courtesy and let the customer now what is happening with their order.
So, I had some questions, which I phoned 4 offrd about and was promised a call back with the answer. Unfortunately, not even once they did. So now I simply do not call them with my business. Simple as that.

For those of you who flame about a deposit. Go and do the nasty thing to yourself. This is just the way business is in today’s competitive market place. And this is how it will be. Small specialised privetly operated shops just don’t have the capital to invest in your parts. I have seen shops going out and forking out thousands on parts such as sets of specialized axles and engines just to never see the a$$wipe’s who ordered the work face again. That is how businesses go out of business. If you don’t like paying deposits you can go to a big corporate place, like GM or Walmart with billions, but I doubt they will put those Dana 44s under your sami stuffed with ARB’s and custom built external roll cage.

So in a nutshell, I, for my own reasons don’t deal with 4offrd, but I don’t agree with blaming all your grief exclusively on Al either.

BTW, I hate politics.

As many of you know, Al did the SAS on my X. The quality of work was very good. It took a bit longer than expected, but well worth the wait (after all, you don't rush an artist). The price was a little more than expected, but again, well worth the money.

It's not easy being a small business owner, and I have noticed some growing pains such as not answering phones, not returning calls, etc. I wish him success, it would be a loss to the 4x4 community if we lost 4offrd.

Just my 2 cents.

As an aside, I have a simple rule for business. There are 3 basic points to ponder: price, service, quality. Now for any given business, pick 2, cuz that's all you're ever going to get!

I'm sure you could find someone that has had a problem with just about every 4x4 place in the Lower Mainland. It's a normal thing to not have EVERYTHING go perfectly. It might not even be their fault!

I rarely go through a day without seeing one or two vehicles with a 4OffRd banner on their windshield. I don't think they have them because they think the place sucks...

Even IF (and I mean if) their service was bad, they still help the community. More stores, mean more competition, mean lower prices.
