hey all

What are my options for an axle that is really damm close to my stock d35's width, I'm looking at upgrading to a stronger axle (ie: d44, ford 9" or whatever ) but I'm not sure of my choices, haveing some minor alterations done to the axle wouldn't be a problem ( ie: moving of spring perches and shock locations )but excessive custom work would hurt my wallet. help me out here folks.

Ford 9" from late 70's/ early 80's Lincoln versailles......59" FTF, factory rear disc with park brake Same bolt pattern as front (5 on 4.5) 28 spline axles, large bearing (set 20)

Dana 44 from MJ commanche or XJ wagoneer (tow package) 60" FTF same bolt pattern as front (5 on 4.5) 30 spline axles, (smaller Wheel bearing than Fords)

9" rear from Ford granada/torino etc...
59" FTF drum brake 28 spline large bearing (set 20)

Ford 8.8 rear from Explorer (95+ V-8 only) 58" FTF rear disc with park brake, C-clip (but the axle is retained by the disc brake design)
31 spline axles ,most came with factory Trac-lock posi......(5 on 4.5 pattern)

Rear Dana 44 from TJ, 30 spline axles but same thickness axle tubes as the D35.....and the same small brakes.........

Other axle options:

Front/rear from 76-79 Ford F-150 Dana 44/9".....Strong but really Wide(65")...Krazy carpet to the rescue,(5 on 5.5 pattern, will need new rims, knuckles not easy to do high steering on)

Front/rear from late model Jeep Wagoneer, 63" wide drivers side drop front 44, (6 on 5.5 )pattern,GM style brakes some had flat top Knuckles (for the Steering arms)rear 44 bigger brakes than the tj/mj/xj........

Front/ rear from IH Scout Dana 44's (late 70's preferred) Knuckles have steering already higher than most, all the front end knuckle parts are wacky IH only stuff, rear is 30 spline. front has passenger side drop so you will need to swap transfercases.......59" FTF( 5 on 5.5 pattern)

Why V8 only? I thought all 95+ Exploders rear ends were the same: 31 spline, disk brakes.

I'm fairly sure that only the V8 Explorers got the 31 spline axles, the V6 Explorer/ Rangers got the 28 spline.......both had discs after 95... Paul G would know more though...

I think we have discussed this before. As I recall, the Ranger has a 28 spline and virtually all of them are drums. All Explorers have 31 spline (drum and disk)
