I have the chance to get a front Dana 44 and rear Dana 60 from a 1971 Ford F250. How much work would it be to put these in my 86 F150? Is this a solid Front Axle? What would something like this be worth? These are complete drum to drum including springs and they even have tires and wheels on them.

Thanks

You will need the spring buckets, shock mounts, trac bar, radius arms for the front end, and the steering linkage will need to be redone...the back should be fairly str8 forward the front may require some fab for the trac-bar...it would be worth the time...2BIT has done this on his bronco he might have more details!

Yeah it is the drum break. Would it be worth just buying for the rear axle? Is this Dana 60 better then a Sterling 10.25? What would be a good deal on this? $200, it is complete drum to drum and includes wheels and tires and springs? Would the rear be a good keeper because I plan on getting a mid 80's F250 4x4 one day?

i wouldnt do it...you wont have anything line up at all, front and rear
i am installing a earlier rear dana 70 in my newer style truck and nothing works out at all, i had to rework and make everything work...as to the front a closed knuckle drum brake setup is not very desireable...your ttb is better till you can find a hp 44 or hp 60 front...one other thing is the older fords have 2 1/2 wide spring packs and will not make things easy with your newer fords 3 inch spring pack

Yeah I think it will be a no go. Are there many differences between the early 70's Dana 60's and the late 70's dana 60's? What is an HP Dana 60? Thanks

the main differences are the frames on the older trucks are narrower than the newer ones...so the spring perches are wrong to start things off (have to be relocated)..the older ones use narrower springs (2 1/2inches-3inches)...77 1/2 trucks and up have the same frame widths (friends 93 1/2t bronco had the same width as my 77 3/4t)...hp means high pinion differential....the output yoke of the diff is at the top...diff has been flipped over and redesigned basically...unique too fords in fullsize trucks... and not a lot of difference between older and newer dana 60/70's cept the spring perches are in different locations of course and i have heard the newer dana 70 have bigger carrier bearings...hope this helps some

Sticking 3" wide springs on a re-located perch designed for a 2-1/2" wide spring doesn't make a world of difference. Re-locating the spring perches is really quite trivial seeing as you should adjust the pinion angle anyways when installing on a vehicle with a lift, this gives you the chance to adjust the pinion angle while relocation the position of the perches. I believe the early D60's were 16 spline axle shafts instead of the more desireable 35 spline, but at least you still got a full floater! You could also steal the D60 out of a 2wd.

ah but sticking 3inch springs on a pre 77 dana 70 on a post 77 truck don't work..trust me i am in the middle of doing that conversion right now..the newer frames are wider and they no fit!!!
i am using 4 hangers off the rear of a front leaf setup from a 90's style truck, they off set the spring part way under the frame and hopefully i will have enough room to make everything work, i will still have to relocate the perches....the time you put the stock 3inch springs onto the older 70 diff, the springs go right thru the brake drums.
i tried to use older 2 1/2 spring hangers with 2 1/2 spring packs and they only left me 1/2 clearance from the outside of the spring pack to the back of the brake drum...so in other words they would have hit my tires..doh

also do they make 35 spline rear dana 60's?...they make front dana 60 35 spline units i know (dana 70 guts basically), most dana 60's are 30 spline or 16 spline...the 16 spline being older style diffs

I would have thought that all D60's would be 35 spline whether it be front or rear??? What is the axle shaft diameter of the 30 spline D60 axle?

i have never heard of a 35 spline rear, doesn't mean they don't exist though, but if they do they sure are rare or all scooped up, i just measured the axle i have here from my 30 spline dana 60 rear and it was 1 1/8 thick for the shaft and 1 1/4 for the outside of the spines...i had to rebuild my dana 60 powerlock that i was installing in my front hp dana 35 spline 60 front end...and there was no such thing as a 35 spline powerlock kit for the application, so i installed a dana 70 (which is 35 spline) powerlock kit into my powerlock and voila i had my 35 spline 60!!...apparently the guts are the same, its just the side gears are obviously different...hope this makes sense..lol

IIRC they are 1.351" .. saw an article in ??? and it showed the size difference between different shafts - the 31 splie 9" is actually a larger diameter than the 30 spline d60. if I can find the mag again I'll post more info.
