Im pulling out my 2.3l 4 bang from my 83' ford ranger and i was just told that it is imparitive to know the alignment of the teeth in the gear..but im confused about if it is the gear teeth, or, like a spline type deal inside the distributor itself. and how can i take care of this concern?
thanks.

bring the engine to TDC #1 cylinder, mark the relation of the rotor to the distributor body. make sure it is a good obvious mark that won't come off over the time it takes to rebuild the engine. pull the distributor, send engine off for rebuild. when it comes back, line up TDC #1 cylinder and replace distributor aligning the rotor with the mark. start engine and set timing as normal. not that difficult just make sure it's marked good. it's all in the attention to detail.
