Me and a bunch of locals from kamloops are thinking of making a trip to the rubicon over may long weekend. How far is it from kamloops?? Where are some good places(cheap) to stay, can you camp on trail?? what extra expenses should we expect. We are also thinkin of goin to the baja this summer for a week or so, or heading to Moab Utah or Colorado somewhere.

I have heard there is still snow on the Rubicon in May. I was going to stop there when I go to Cali next week but I was told there is sometimes snow until June. So instead I will be hitting some places further south (East of San Diego)

Yup, probably still snowed in but ya never know.

You can camp on the trail but if you camp at the Rubicon Springs it will cost you a very moderate fee (can't recall the exact cost). If it was hot out, I'd definitely plan to camp at the springs 'cuz they've got very nice camping spots with a nearby creek and waterfall.

Camping at the Granite Bowl was quite enjoyable. Many people also camp near Buck Island and Spider Lake.

I'd really suggest mail ordering a Rubicon trail guide so you can plan things out and know which trails you want to do before you get there. It's easy to accidentally bypass the Old Sluice which would be a real shame because it's a ton of fun.

We camped all the way down and back 'cept for one night when it was too late to set up camp. We preferred camping simply because we could guard our vehicles/tools/parts/camping gear. Hauling all our crap into a motel room every night would have been aggravating.

From the border it took us about 2 days to get down there. We were takin' it easy there and back. Tip: if your truck is noisey (eg: soft-top), wear ear plugs. They do a remarkable job of minimizing driver fatigue. If you need to hear the cb/stereo, consider getting ear protectors with built-in speakers. Speaking of which, anyone know where to get some?

from Vancouver it was about 20 hours of straight driving

And I did 18 of them!! We went just before the May long weekend last year and got as far as little sluice and then heard reports of it being snowed in. Biggest problem we had was TONS of water!! Over the wheels in alot of spots. It was way to much fun though. I would do it again in a heart beat.

can'
t wait for the summer and a few more mods to the truck. I'm planning on taking 2 cans of spray bomb clearcoat and a tube of black touch up paint so i can seal the scratches and dents and write where and when they were done. Hahahahaha, i'm not building my truck for show.

RUBICON info:
Hi all, Del Albright, here. Newbie to your list. But I'm the right guy to talk to about the Rubicon (and many other land use issues). May is early -- snow and wet. But visit my web site for more Rubicon hot poop, or join our Friends of the Rubicon to help keep the trail open.
