Ok so I've been pricing tools lately and have some pretty serious sticker shock. So in keeping with my "I can make that" attitude I went on a hunt for homebrew alternatives and now I'm wondering what else is out there. So far I've come accross a low buck stick welder, an effort to build a plasma cutter, various presses, and this tube bender. So what I want to know is, does anyone have anymore homebrew tool ideas?

I've got an ac/dc arc welder just sitting at my dads place.
Going to get busy this weekend. It's going to be a plasma cutter soon.

Whohoo.........

Take pics and keep a running tab on any parts you use, what you did and how, and the cost. With plasma costing what it does I think alot of people would want to have a porven design to make there own low $$$ shop cutter.

And good luck! I hope it works. :D

I hope it works too. Will save me a huge amount of time fabricating stuff. With a huge mortgage, a wife and insuring 3 vehicles, it's tough to find spare cash to buy equipment.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I still have not finished my homebrewed tube bender. Its an ugly SOB compared to the one posted here, but im positive it will work. Im building something I think will work. Maybe if I have nothing to do one day, I may clean it up a bit hahaha. Its a real strong SOB though. It can only make 90 degree bends like that one as well.

So far it has cost me under $150 including the jack and die from princess auto. Metal will be extra for you (i get mine for free at my dads work).

I wont be finishing it for a long time. Im working on my mog axles right now (flange and disc brakes). I dont need any tubes bent right now. But if you wanna come take a look at my concept ( it is half finished ) I live in Burnaby.

The Rotating Die Pivot is done, and the stand and rotating mount for the jack is done. The clamp is also done. All that needs to be done is the mounts and the slider.

Two of them...
here is a spot welder
and an arc welder

JeepFREAK, did PA have surplus tube dies or are you using pipe dies, is there even a difference? Is is a vertical or a horizontal design? I don't think I'll be any where near Burnaby anytime soon but if you can post some pics that would be great.

A pipe bender or a tube bender? There is a difference between the two... any chance it looked like this?

Home anodizing anyone?

No info, but a picture of a decent sized press brake:

Shop press:

A little guy I made for a friend:

Probably not worth the hassle or not cost effective, but interesting anyway:

Convert your stick welder to TIG:

(Had another page, but it seems not to exist anymore. I have to start saving these pages to my C: drive) :angry

This is just plain cool:

Another spot welder:

Looks like something useful for 4wheelers:

Umm...I think that's it for now...

Im building a tube bender not a pipe bender. They are different. A pipe bender is known to wrinkle tubes. Ive never seen it myself, but to be safe im building a tube bender. Apparently they put different types of forces on the tubes than a pipe bender would.
