I've got an '88 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 and recently, while off-roading, bottomed my Jeep out and now there is this super annoying rattle coming from my catalytic converter. It gets really bad when the engine is warm. I need emissions by the end of this month. Will I fail emissions b/c of this noise? Are there any other factors in this setup that might cause me to fail? Finally, what exactly is this rattle?

The rattle should not make you fail. The same thing happened to me. I pulled the cat and what happend is the honeycomb material inside has broken into some very large pieces causing the rattle. There should still be enough still in tact to make you pass.

Just make sure that you warm up the engine really good before you go through aircare, and don't turn off the engine while in line.

You should think about changing it because the honeycomb guts will start to plug up your exhaust system causing a loss in power down the road.
