I have a 1983 CJ7 with the inline 6 258. Now this guy was supposed to start a rebuild a month ago but someone wreaked my other vehicle so it is my daily driver this winter. It has about 137,000 miles on it and has ran pretty decent. I have replaced various parts on it including the gas tank and sending unit. Just last week driving to work as normal the engine started to miss a bit while accelerating and went away. No big deal. Well it has gotten worse. Today coming home from work i could only get it to about 10 Mph because it was missing so bad and the more gas I gave it the more bogged down the engine became. I pulled over into a parking lot because I could smell gas. Got out and looked under the jeep and in the engine compartment but found nothing. (It was barely running when I got out but 2 minutes later of sitting there at idle and it sound as normal with no missing. I go in and started driving and as soon as I gave it any gas it the engine started to bog down and miss. I put it in nutral and put my foot to the floor to try to blow out the gas in the engine and it took about 2 minutes to get the engine to 3000 RPM and then it just bogged down and died. I tried to start it back up and after a few trys is started back up realy missing bad and after about 2 minutes of sitting the at idle it got better and the idle was normal. Smell of gas when it is missing. I have already put a new coil in it. It is also cold when i drive it. Only 5 minutes to work drive. Blows black smoke bad to when it is running bad. Any idea what is the problem? Seems like it is getting loaded up with fuel but the choke is not sticking. The carb is not original but aftermarket. All the parts I ahve put on it are at least 3 months old and made a 1000 mile vacation with no problem 2 months ago. Any help is apreciated. Thanks.

check cap and rotor and the plug wires. Run the vehicle in the dark with no lights and see if you can see any arcing coming from the wires.

Just checked the wires in the dark. They are a bit cracked but I also ran my hand up each one because i could see no sparks and did not get any shocks.;-) I will have to wait till it is light to check the cap and rotor.

posibilty as well is clogged jets/needles etc. had this happen to a samurai i owned jam the pedal down and about 2-3 minutes later it would stop coughing, burping, farting, and run ok ... turned out to be paper towel from the last carb rebuild the place I bought it from did. wanna see road rage? just imagine owning a vehicle for a week, have it be in the shop for four of those days (their bill) then enjoy the exciting expeience of doing 2kph across the Rutherford intersection with the pedal to the floor ... just about ripped the steering wheel off! I'm much better no that I own an old ford
with no choke

pop the inlet hose off the carb put it in a glass jar ard crank the engine over .. should be a steady stream of gas coming out if it's intermitent change the filter and try again .. no change it's the pump. if all seems ok check the carb ... OH and does anything change when it warms up? as in run better? if your chokes out it'll give similar symptoms when cold (guess how I know
)
another thing to consider is the accelerator pump on the carb .. look down the thraot and have someone push the pedal to the floor, there should be a strong shot of fuel down the throat of the carb (of course you're doing this with the engine off)

Sounds like water in the float bowl of the carb
When this happens the main jets get plugged but the engine will still run by pumping the gas pedal and basically running off of the accelerator pump.
Get some methyl hydrate in the gas tank and with a small bottle get some down the float bowl vent too.......and the fuel filter should always be changed after any kind of gas tank work...it's amazing what kinds of sludge and crap can be stirred up.

Thanks guys for all your help but you will all laugh when you hear what the problem was. I am in to much of a hurry in the morning and just jump in start it and go. Now that it has gotten coolder here it needs about 10 minute to warm up and run fine. Guess it doesnt like to run cold with the choke closed. Thanks again.
