I was thinking about doing the 4spd tranny to 3 speed transfer on a 76 fj-40 but i am not to sure whats involved. Has anyone done this?

You need the 3-speed case, an adapter gear from a transition year (74), a new output shaft bearing for the 3-speed case (79 B210 will do).
You will have an 18% lower low range.

75 FJ40, 4 inch BDS springs, 1inch body, 35's, detroit EZ locker, power steering, disc brakes, 3spd low range gears, full cage, XD9000i, extended shackles, dual batteries....you get the idea.

This doesn't sound to tough. I think I might do this instead of rebuild the 4 speed t-case.

It'san easy swap. You will need to use your t-case flanges on the 3-speed case though.
