My buddy's head gasket blew on his Ford and I was wondering if it is really important to actually get them machined when he goes to replace the gasket??

If they're cast iron they're probably fine, but if they're aluminium check to see if they're warped. Aluminium heads warp very easily.

I'd spend the little extra and get them machined, they magnaflux?? i think that's the word? the heads to see if they're cracked and then they shave them down to ensure they're 100% true and the gasket will definately fit proper, if you don't the heads may have slight bends in them and they'll leak like crap still.
