what is the best ratio I should gear my XJ pumpkins if I was running 33's. Presently I am running 31's but plan the upgrade to a larger size soon. Also, where is the best place I can get a good job at a great price

Thanks.....

3.73 or 4.10 would be my choice.

I if you are going to 33 3.73 would do if you go 35 you will need 4.10 or it will be slugish. Call berts in surrey they gave me a wickid price for all the work they did on my axles.

PERSONALLY I'd go with 4.56's...

Everyone I know who went 4.10's with 33's is kicking themselves for not doing it...

There will always be that excuse to go to 35's then.

In my cherokee with 33's I run a 4:56 and it's perfect.

The gearing you can run will depend on your engine and your tranny. For example, my t18 4 speed, which in all practicality is a 3 speed as far as street driving goes, would benefit from lower gearing to make up for the wide gear ratios in the tranny, but 4.56's mean avoid highway driving at all costs.
I currently have 33's with 3.55's 4.2L and t18 4 speed, and it's Sluggish to say the least. You KNOW when you're going up hill.

But this also depends on what the stock gears were!!

I went to 33's from stock tires (~12.5% increase) and went to 4.10's from 3.08 (~25% increase) This was the perfect combination and dont regret it at all. I get a better low range and I can actually use my 5th gear uphills!!! I can do ~120Km/h at ~2800rpm. This is just perfect as I do a lot of highway driving. Now I would love to go lower, but you can kiss your highway driving goodbye.

Just work out the ratios and percentages at different RPM's and see what you would like better.

Now if you had say 3.73 stock and you went to 4.10's you are really keeping you stock ratio, and no one likes to do that, you always have to go lower..

Alright, i've been trying to figure this out for awhile and it seems, with 33's if you want as close to stock as you can get with a 5spd, you want 3.73 gears, if its an auto, then 4.10's. If you want a little better crawling ratio with a little more umph, then go with 4.10's for the 5spd. If you don't mind the engine being in the above 2000RPM's in 5th gear then 4.56 is good. 4.10's are perfect for 33's, but not going to improve crawling that much over stock. The XJ's powerband is between 2000 and 3000RPM's so 4.56's wont be harsh on the engine at all. The only thing i'm having trouble with is that 4.56 gears are more expensive than 4.10's since you can just by the 4.10s at Gary's used, which is much cheaper. So really its what you prefer. 3.73 is good, but not great. 4.10 is right on the money for a tiny better than stock, and 4.56 is going to be your most powerful and most effective gearing. But then everyone has their own opinions, but i've asked this question before, and thats what the results seem to be.

A side note, Cornjeeper on here has 4.10's and 35's and doesn't have a problem at all with the setup.
Cheers

WOW!! thanks guys. Lots to think about....
OK highway driving is a requirement. I have an automatic, so it looks like 4.10 is the best all around application. But is 4.56 that big of a difference on the highway and cost.

As for cost, approx. how much to re-gear to 4.10, and since I have the pumpkin open, how much more to get a fair set of lockers put in??

thanks..

Yeah but Ryan...I hate to think what you're missing by going the route you did. I had 3.55's stock and just going to 30's noticed a difference...with 33's it's damn near horrible. Sure I can still drive but Christ it takes a huge chunk outta the power bill. I lost 5mpg after going to 33's. Make mine 4.56.

if you wanna go with 4.10s you can find a 4cyl axle set and probably get the two of them cheaper than regearing one of your axles (early 4cyl came with 3.73, later was 4.10 you can use a YJ rear but have to mve the spring perches, don't even look at a YJ front .. too much work, stick with an XJ piece)

anybody notice his sig says '86 XJ? that means 2.5litre 4cylinder, or 2.8 V6, unless its been swapped in he does NOT have the 4.0 inline 6. so gearing choise may be different than all you 6 cylinder people.

correct me if im wrong though.

I run currenly run stock 3.73 gearing in my 4cylinder 5speed XJ with 31x10.5's. I turn 2900RPM at 100km/h, 3200rpm somewhere around 120km/h. 4.10's would be nice but id rather have more power so im not bothering, waiting for the next one when I can afford a new(er) vehicle.

Exactly...all the better reason to choose 4.56...

I didn't notice that...in that case, I concur with Nikon_jeeper. 4.56.

Yup, I still have the 2.8L V6 so I guess 4.56 is what I'll do. thanks guys...

yep me too 4.56 minimum, my wife's YJ is 2.5L (so 4.10s) and 31s forget 5th unless you're going downhill (sometimes on the flats) it's good off road but sucks on the hway if ya wanna pass etc ... but I'm happy with it. 33s... well let's just say don't embarass yourself, you'll be in second on a good hill (guy I know has 2.5l XJ with 32s and the Malahat is a 2nd gear affair) don't know about the V-6 tho.
Just my $0.02

I HAVE A 89 YJ WITH A 2.5 AND I RUN 33 SUPER SWAMPERS. THE STOCK 4.10'S WERE NOT LOW ENOUGH SO I JUST INSTALLED 4.88'S AND LOVE THEM. THEY BROUGHT MY GEARING BACK COLSE TO STOCK.

But Phil, I'm not missing anything. If you look at my stock gears (3.08) compared to yours (3.55) thats a 13% difference. So me going to 4.10 would be a 25% difference, where you go from 3.55 to 4.56 is a 22% difference. Almost exactly the same. So in a sense both of us are at the exact same ratio if I go with 4.10's and you with 4.56.

Ryan
