Just how hard is it to change the rear seal on a 4.2 YJ? I had mine fixed in September and I think I paid in the neighborhood of $400. 2000 kms later and the bastard is leaking again.

Is this something I can fix myself? Honestly I am way more comfortable with electrical repairs. I know that I have to remove to oil pan but from there my Chilton is very weak. Something about driving out the old seal and seating the new one. Is this something I can do with two jack stands, basic tools, and a couple hours?

For $400 you might as well try to do it yourself. Read the YJ FAQ (www.bc4x4.com/faqs/yj.cfm).
