Okay, here's the problem i'm having. I'm putting my starter back together, but I can't keep the brushes pushed in in order to insert the main assembly back in place. The springs push the brushes out too far.
This is a CJ5 starter. But i know there are other starters like this. I've reassembled a YJ starter and i didn't have this problem, the brushes just snap into place and u're set. But here, the brushes are being pushed out too far. Is there a trick someone can recommend on how to keep those brushes in place long enough to put this damn thing back together???

Can you cut up a pop can and use the metal as shims to keep each brush in place while you slide the rotor assembly back in?

there should be holes in the brush holder if you straighten a paper clip it should fit in the hole to hold the brushes in while you slid in the armature.
