Biggest area to look at is the frame, if it is in good condition then the truck is likely worth fixing up some more and using it, but if the frame is bad then I would part it out and get another truck...

i say pop out the front axle and transfer case, part the rest and buy my 4runner,then throw the solid axle on and double up the trasfer cases..... that'd be sweet

I've been running a 1982 beater for a couple years now.

There's a rust hole through the inside frame rail on the drivers side. Now that the hole is there it's pretty easy to keep the frame cleaned out!

Old is good. I'm not near as worried to bump into a tree or rock as I would be with more money into a newer/nicer rig.

DO NOT SCRAP IT!
I absolutely love that body style...keep building that baby up. I've got a beautiful trussed 1985 rear axle housing and shafts that you can have if you promise to put them under it. As for the BOX....bend some tube and build a flat deck if you can fabricate or buy allpro's tube deck kit. http://www.allprooffroad.com/pickuptrailarmor/pickupflatbedkit
Don't bother swapping a box onto it, waste of time because their so rusted, body work's for lowriders.
Just had to give my 2cents cause I love that year yota.
Keep buildin
