You were in the right area. When you get to the parking lot, there is a road that goes up on the right side. Go up the hill and keep going until the road starts going back down. Once at the bottom of the hill turn right onto Coldwater FSR and it will take you back to the Coquihalla Highway on the other side of the toll booth.
Now that it's snowing up there, you probably won't be able to get through until next summer.
