I have a 1991 yj, i want some more power. I only have a 2.5 engine. i was thinking about putting a 4.0 engine but was told you have to swap everything, and should just buy a jeep with a 4.0 engine in it. i was wonering if any of you guys ever heard of putting a turbo in a jeep. it would be easy to pick one up at the auto wrecker it just a matter of if it would work or not.

anything is possible with enough time and money. the 2.5 has a factory rated compresion ratio of 9.2:1 though, dont know if thats a bit high or not for durability purposes.

Doing a turbo right isn't cheap either.
Figure close to $4,500 if you use new parts.
To my knowledge there is no compatable "donor" that you can just pull a turbo out of and bolt it into a Jeep. Everything from the mounting flange to the injector controler would be custom.

I remember when "Bear" installed that supercharger. He later concluded that a small block Chevy would have given him the same power with way fewer hasles.

That 2.5 isn't going to like a turbo. You can do it cheap if you can fab your own exhaust manifold. get an SDS injector setup, and a Ford T3 (of 84-86 T-bird or 85-89?Merkur XR4Ti) Keep boost below 5psi, and you should be fairly safe. Cost wise, if your time is worth ANYTHING, and it would be cheaper to get a bigger (better) motor tho. Or you can put my 2.3 Merkur motor in, and have over 200HP for $1000! There's no rush like 18psi! hehehe
Seriously tho, if you dig jeeps, trade the 2.5 in on a few year old 4.0L TJ. You get real suspension and a real motor, all in one!
